Continuum / Kyma System
This is an incredible music performance system optimized for real-time playability. It is centered around the Kyma Sound Workstation, manufactured by Symbolic Sound. More info about the Kyma system can be found at their corporate web site. Kyma is software which programs a dedicated hardware box called the Capybara (not shown). The primary input device for controlling Kyma is the Continuum Fingerboard, manufactured by Haken Audio. As well, additional sound control is accomplished with the help of the Lemur control surface by Jazzmutant and the Intuos 3 tablet by Wacom Technology Co.
Examples of me playing this system can be found in a number of the audio/video examples at this website, including trombone sounds in the Stuart McLean Christmas special. This trombone is also demoed here in a video presentation. The trombone sound is based on the innovative Kyma Tau sound synthesis algorithm. Another sound example of that same Tau algorithm is a Kalimba sound.
Other sound examples performed on this system are in the Explorations area of this site.
My album Distance Blue was performed exclusively using the Continuum/Kyma system. All the tracks on that CD are based around an Kyma algorithm called the harmonic resonator, with sonic ambience added by Pete Johnston's amazing CrossFilter, which also resides inside Kyma.
